If high speed Armadillos are your thing, you're in luck. The next release of MAME will include Armadillo Racing (AM2, World).

This PCB is rarely seen outside of it's cabinet and up 'til now was only seen for the Japanese market. Luck was on our side when we spotted a PCB for sale on eBay. Upon closer inspection it turned out to be an English version. So with the combined efforts of Phil Bennett, Ryan Holtz, Bill D. and myself we were able to archive what is likely an extremely rare version of this quirky little game.

Now, even I can understand the game instructions ;-p

Ready the MAME 0.232 update of "MAME progetto-SNAPS".
• It's available this folder on Mega.nz that allows individually download files to update from version to version. The folder will be temporarily available until the next update.
• It's been two months since the last update and here it is! Unfortunately I have not yet been able to re-align Snap and Titles images, still missing 285 "clones" games. Great update of the "Artworks WS" category (with a work of cataloging and updating the .lay files by Mentat which I thank very much).
• The next update is scheduled for Sunday, August 15, 2021.

MAME 0.233

Are you ready for MAME 0.233? With dozens of reported issues fixed, over a hundred pull requests merged, and a flurry of development across all areas, our mid-year release is huge! Some of the more interesting machines added this month include several prototype JAKKS Pacific TV Games, the elusive English version of Namco’s Armadillo Racing, and the LCD hand-held game Space Mission from Tronica.

There are lots of new Apple IIgs and Macintosh software list items, tying in nicely with the recently improved emulation of these systems, as well as an update to the Colour Genie collection, and a massive haul of MicroBee floppy dumps. A few more Mattel Juice Box cartridges have been dumped, allowing you to marvel at the poor-quality, 6 frames-per-second video.

Significantly improved systems include the Atari Portfolio, Tandy MC-10, and Tandy VIS. Carl has continued to work on Japanese home computers, and Ville Linde is back this month, bringing a batch of updates for the Konami Hornet platform. Juno First, The Tin Star, The Empire Strikes Back have all had bugs squashed, and some of the last remaining regressions from the Yamaha FM synthesis rewrite have been resolved. David Haywood has turned his attention to bootlegs of games including Final Lap 3, Guttang Gottong, and Alien Storm.

This release includes preliminary sound support for the Super A'Can console. On the topic of sound, some Yamaha synthesisers have been promoted to working, and MAME can now play back standard MIDI files to exercise machines that take MIDI input.

There are several general usability improvements in this release, including updated Chinese and Greek translations, better configuration handling for slot devices, and a few small enhancements to the built-in user interface. Issues with artwork using SVG and Windows DIB (BMP) images on ARM/AArch64-based Linux systems should also be fixed.

As always, you can find much more detail about all the action in the whatsnew.txt file, and the source and 64-bit Windows binary packages are available from the download page.

- ddribble.cpp, finalizr.cpp and ironhors.cpp: Minor cleanups
- dkong.cpp and ladybug.cpp: Clean up machine\latch8.cpp a little: Making the bit read functions honour the XOR mask is easy in theory, but dkong.cpp is doing scary things with the XOR mask and bit read handlers on one of its latches, so it could end up breaking something. Honouring the read callbacks would add two tests to each of the bit read functions, which could hurt performance. The whole design of this device seems somewhat incoherent.

- MAME
. VIDEO RENDERING SYSTEM
. Fixed assertion failure with -D_GLIBCXX_ASSERTIONS (emu\rendlay.cpp)
. Use setjmp/longjmp for libjpeg error unwinding. Apparently Linux AArch64 has issues with throwing exceptions across C function frames (emu\rendutil.cpp).
. Removed some unneeded VIDEO_START_OVERRIDEs in atarig1.cpp, atarig42.cpp, blstroid.cpp, blueprnt.cpp, eolith.cpp, galaga.cpp, galspnbl.cpp, igs_fear.cpp, megaplay.cpp and vegaeo.cpp
. MEMORY SYSTEM
. Allow to know the currently selected entry (emu\emumem.h)

. Initialized m_config in all situations (emu\addrmap.cpp)
. UI
. Added reset to default to BIOS selection menu (the one from the TAB menu, not the popup when starting a machine) (ui\miscmenu.cpp)
. Allow saved states to be deleted from the internal UI (ui\state.cpp)
. On input mapping menus, use UI left/right to switch between setting and appending to an input sequence (ui\inputmap.cpp and ui\menu.cpp).
. PLUGINS
. Strip CR characters showing at the end of each history.xml line under Linux (plugins\data\data_history.lua)
. Input port: Added setter for initial state (machine\input_merger.cpp)
. Slots: Preserve configuration for slot cards when not selected. Slightly better test for deselected slot cards (emu\ioport.cpp).
. Miscellaneous improvements for software lists: Show list name in software selection menu (machines have multiple lists). Actually report software list parsing errors during validation. Check that software list name attribute matches filename. Limit software list names to 24 characters - they're getting too long, and they need to be practical in command lines.
. Removed leftover mame64 from docs (configuringmame.rst and usingmame.rst)
. Multi-Language: Re-generate localisations. Updated Chinese (language\Chinese_Simplified and Chinese_Traditional) and Greek translations.
- Compiling
. Allow building without PulseAudio on Linux (makefile)
. Fixed stupid warning (-Wno-unused-const-variable) (scripts\genie.lua)
. Fixed PCAP builds
. Added helpers for 64-bit count leading zeroes/ones (osd\eivcarm.h, osd\eminline.h). Fixed 32-bit GCC/Clang builds (osd\eigcc.h).
. End the big-endian block in the right place, fixes FreeBSD section.
. Eliminated remaining uses of auto_alloc and friends. Split off auto_alloc changes from deprecated branch. Make the keymap reader non-static so it can access the unique_ptr. Removed emualloc.cpp/h.
. Retire legacy object lib\util\pool.cpp/h, removing vestigial references.
- Debugger: Fixed sound_assert in debug builds (machine\netlist.cpp)

Changes

- A recent change in MAME caused MESSUI and MAMEUI to crash at start. The unsafe code parts in MAME had to be reverted.

NegaMAME 0.233-1

Along with MAME and all its fork, NegaMAME 0.233-1 is also ready for download. Go grab it at http://babelsoft.net/products/negamame.htm

This MAME derivative has been designed to be used with the front-end Negatron in order to have complete access to all the machine configuration options within Negatron, especially useful for emulated computers and consoles.

This is quite irrelevant for emulated arcade games though. If you only play arcade games, you can simply use Negatron with regular MAME.

Note: 0.233-1 must be understood as the 2nd version of NegaMAME synchronised with MAME v0.233. If other issues arise with this version, I would release a v0.233-2.

History.xml 2.33

History.xml 2.33 available at the usual place

https://www.arcade-history.com/index.php?page=download

Guaranteed without old, now unused, ROM names. Everything has been renamed to match MAME 0.233.

As you can see, History.xml 2.33 serves info for 37083 roms on the mainlist and 118097 roms on the softlists. Only 1193 roms (mainlist) and 10935 roms (softlists) are missing.

I'm already working on adding some missing ROMs. New version soon !
